Foodie facts about Dee

  • I love Mom's food.
  • I'm a self-confessed carnivore - chicken, mutton/lamb...all of it.
  • The first time I cooked on my own was when I learned how to make vegetable grimaldi from a cookbook when I was 14. It was for Home Science in high school.
  • I promptly forgot how to make it in a week.
  • Cooking was something I really figured out how to do once I lived on my own in Sheffield, UK from September 2009.
  • I once made such a terrible dish I had to throw most of it. It tasted like I'd emptied the bowels of all the salt reserves in the world into that cooking pot.
  • Sunny side up eggs gross me out.
  • Two dishes Mom makes that are so amazing I can polish it all off: a main dish we've blandly named 'Baked Chicken', and a dessert that we call 'The Dessert with No Name'.
  • Everything tastes better with cheese in my opinion
  • Vegetables I will not eat unless their taste is masked completely: okra (bhindi), brinjal (baingan), cauliflower, cabbage, bitter gourd (karela), and many many many more.
  • Veg food that I will deign to eat include, but are not restricted to, most kinds of chaat except pani puri (have eaten pani puri only when forced at emotional blackmail-point, which is rare because my family/friends let me be for most part!), and most South Indian dishes.
  • I love Tabasco. And Hot as well as Extra Hot Peri Peri Sauce from Nandos.
  • I have a feeling my maternal grandmother thinks people who can't handle Nandos' Extra Hot sauce are wimps. I agree.
  • My paternal grandmother used to make the best puranpolis in the world.
  • I can eat a lot at one sitting. And still have room for dessert.
  • I generally don't drink anything while eating.
  • I once tried to go vegetarian, on a whim, just to see how long I'd last. I think it was 8 or 10 days before I succumbed. I'd never been so gastronomically miserable before.
  • I don't like to eat seafood dishes not made at home. Unless it's fish and chips.
  • Under no circumstances do I eat prawns.
  • When I'm eating at home, I'm either reading or watching television.
  • I love coffee but ever since living in the UK for 1.5 years, I've become a tea person as well. Masala chai is a winner! Plus, now I don't like instant coffee very much. This I blame on having a coffee machine in my London flat. Now it's the real deal or yuck!
  • When I was younger, my mother was probably aghast at the amount of food I was capable of consuming. Whatever everyone else couldn't finish, would land up on my plate.
  • I would like to thank my maternal grandfather for my food-loving genes.

(Dear vegetarians, don't get offended. It's not you, it's me.)

FooDee

FooDee

It started when I got into the habit of taking food pictures. The dam burst one day when I decided to release my vault of food photographs and foodie thoughts; from then on, it was impossible to stop. Why is this website called FooDee? My close friends call me Dee, and I have now become a FooDee. Contact me here.
